OU still looking for Mayfield successor

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma's quarterback situation is not as settled as it seemed.

The Sooners are seeking a replacement for Heisman winner Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray and Austin Kendall are the top candidates for the job. Murray was the backup last season while Kendall redshirted. Based on Murray's outstanding work last season, it seemed he was the clear front-runner. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said that's not the case.

"Austin has started to settle in this last half of spring," Riley said after the spring game. "He's played really well. He did a lot of nice things today. It's neck-and-neck right now without a doubt."

Moos walks back jab at Meyer, Harbaugh

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos said Tuesday night his comment about coaches Urban Meyer of Ohio State and Jim Harbaugh of Michigan "running a little bit scared" following coach Scott Frost's arrival in Lincoln was "a bit tongue in cheek."

In an appearance at an Omaha Press Club luncheon earlier in the day, Moos said Frost would need time to turn around the Cornhuskers, who were 4-8 last season, but better days are ahead.

Huskers take 'baby steps' under Frost

Reality hit Scott Frost upon his return to Nebraska as head coach. The Cornhuskers, physically, looked every bit like the 4-8 team it was in 2017.

His conclusion after his first spring: "We're taking the first baby steps here, and nothing that we're doing right now is where I want it to be and where the coaching staff wants it to be."

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts threw an easy interception into the hands of cornerback Trevon Diggs to put an end to the first-team offense's final drive of the annual A-Day spring game.

It was that kind of scrimmage for Hurts and his White team. Hurts completed 19 of 37 pass attempts for 195 yards and that one interception. More importantly, his offense was kept out of the end zone the entire game.
